Meet The Man Behind The Music Marcus Williams

It was a truly wonderful treat to meet this mysterious, and extremely talented man. His place is tucked away from the public as he is a very private and closed person to most. Entering his space was very warm and comforting. We conducted the interview while Marcus was taking a break in recording his upcoming release “It's All About U. Between recording and managing his label producing and composing music for other project it is a wonder when he finds the time to sleep and further how does he keep the great music flowing..

Interviewer: Hello Marcus I would like to thank you for spending some time with us!

Marcus: You are very welcome it is a pleasure to have you here?

Interviewer: How did a person from St.Louis the middle of the USA wind up in the island of the God Bail Indonesia?

Marcus: Well it was a long road to Bali for sure and what I always felt is Bali found me! I was in a state of flux in that time and out of directions and energy. It came at a time when I needed to have major change. The arms of the creative whomb of the earth open up and gave me the most sincere and warm hug of welcome that I felt this is the place I can truly find peace.

Interviewer: So what strikes you most about being here?

Marcus: Being here allowed me to heal from all the sensitive things that was happening to me. It was turning me into a cold lost soul. When I landed here and I say the night sky and can hear things in my heart you know? It is just so special to be able to hear that way as you can truly find you.

Interviewer: So did this influence you music?

Marcus: Wow yes to say the least at first you know I was coming off this very edging and hard sound. Like anger, as I was angry and later on realized that I was carrying so much emotions, what is funny is when you in the moment you do not feel this happening. And what is even more crazy and know one can help you as they are in the darkness too! So it feels normal to have this high tension each day. Being in the region help me cool and see that life is such an great experience and I feel that we should not be suffering but learning and enjoying our journey in this dimension. The music started to change as I realized this in the heart and as I healed in my soul. I started to get more beautiful melodies and complexed ideas. To give you and idea of how deep that was for me I did not go out and meet anyone for about 5 years I just was in the studio recording and healing.

Interviewer: That is a long time to be out of touch five year.

Marcus: Yes indeed but I felt it was very necessary for me to get healed and my head back on straight!

Interviewer: Being a person wearing so many hats, I mean your a producer, composer, you engineer you recording and a master computer musician. How do you find the time and what drives you to have learned all of this even programming your website!!

Marcus: Well all the time I was thinking how I wanted to be free, freedom is the key for me! I do not like to feel limited and I felt that in my early career I was.

Interviewer: How so?

Marcus: In the early days to record your idea you had to have a studio and in that time, studios were like really expensive to book! So you had to settle for a small demo recording studio. Now while you are in the demo studio you are cooking up your music but your hearing all the parts and ideas that can never materialize as you just do not have the money for the resources to achieve your creative ambitions. It just was a frustrating time. Added that the only way you were to get in a professional studio was to make something commercially viable and maybe just maybe you might get a deal.

Interviewer: I see what you mean, so you felt you really could not express yourself?

Marcus: Right! Worst off is that I found I was always having to balance art versus money.

Interviewer: Very interesting.

Marcus: Yes you are thinking as you have to have money to keep alive on the planet and at the sametime the music your really feeling and felt compelled to create is some how not the music that is popular. So you find you have to try to compose something closed to the flavor of the month to get some work! That was killing me softly with this song, you know.

Interviewer: So how did this get you so motivated now.

Marcus: This changed you know I was put here to heal then the computer had really matured and allowed us to record music they way I heard it! And then the internet was is still getting mature but now I could go direct to my fans and not have to think about the sound that is commercially viable as my fans wanted to hear the essence of me. Wow what a concept!! and that felt good and that is when I started to heal and realized that I needed to have a very professional approach to my work and business. All of a sudden I was the record label, the studio, the musicians and the publisher and you know I like it. I am a very hands on type person and I like to be in control of my business for sure.

Interviewer: What about your musical approach, how do you hear the music as you are performing most of the instruments. What do you hear first?

Marcus: It is funny but I never think about music in musical terms. I think of life and a situation that I feeling that I feel strong about to right. I like to fit the music to the subject.

Interviewer: Can you give me an example of your process?

Marcus: Sure! If you listen to the song on “Let's Talk About It” recorded on my CD seriously. The music is really about a couple having a really bad fight! And after they cooled down they needed to talk about it to come to a resolution from the disagreement. So I tried to make the music groove and keep it emotional and blue. As the trumpet is the male, and as I entered into the first solo “or conversation” I tried to convey the pain and hurt that the man was feeling over the argument. The synth solo was the woman, and I wanted to voice her concerns and feelings to the man just as powerful! Hope you do not think I am to crazy! Anyway as the some progresses the trumpet and the synth start to perform more in together working in harmony.

Interviewer: As if the relationship is more in tune?

Marcus: Exactly! It is the way I think when I right it has to be a meaning or scene or purpose.

Interviewer: You have not been performing for years why? And now that you are more healed do you plan on doing a tour as many seems to want to see you perform.

Marcus: Performing is something I do not often yearn for. I love the recording life so much and being in the woods helps you want to stay in the protective arms of Bali. To give you a small peek into my heart I do miss the stage and would like to perform at some point.

Interviewer: And when will that be? Do you plan to return to the USA to perform?

Marcus: Well it depends right now I get many offers from professional on Facebook and Myspace and some have pointed agents and manager to me as well. But it has not felt right.

Interviewer: Meaning?

Marcus: Well it has to feel right with the right person to work with. I do want perform but I want everything I do from this point to be a pleasurable experience for me, the staff and the fans! I want it to be fun. The USA wow that is a good one I have not been home for over 10 years plus. I would like to do a tour of the USA it would be like a reunion of sorts!

Interviewer: Well I do hope that you will get out to perform as I have had the pleasure to see you on stage and it is magical to see you perform! I really appreciate you taking the time to allow this interview to come about.

Marcus: It was my pleasure I enjoyed my talk with you. One quick question before we wrap this up. When will your next CD be released?

It is scheduled to be released in mid October. I will for sure send out updates to all my fans when it will be in the market. You all have been a great support as I get mails all the time from fans and that always makes me want to give you the best I got. So look out for the next one!
